Hepatitis C is a contagious liver disease that is spread through contact with blood infected with the hepatitis C virus, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Hepatitis C is not transmitted through sneezing, kissing, holding hands or coughing, states the American Liver Foundation.
Drug addicts who share needles, health care workers who work with needles and babies born to mothers who have hepatitis C have a higher risk of developing hepatitis C, explains the CDC.
Symptoms of hepatitis C include yellowing of the skin, fatigue, abdominal pain and dark urine. Between 70 to 80 percent of people infected with hepatitis C display no symptoms of the disease, according to the CDC.
