A herd of cats is called a "clowder" or a "pounce." Additionally, a group of kittens are commonly called a "litter," "kindle" or an "intrigue."

A male cat that has not been neutered is known as a "tom" or "tomcat," and after being neutered, the male cat is known as a "gib." A normal, unaltered female cat is referred to as a "queen."

The hobby known as "cat fancy" refers to the process by which, through controlled breeding, cats can be registered as pedigree pets. A pedigree cat is one whose lineage has been documented by a cat fancy organization. Cats of an unknown ancestry are identified by their type of coat and generally fall into two categories: domestic long-haired and domestic short-haired cats.
