The main predators of the cardinal include hawks, owls and snakes. Domestic cats and dogs have also been known to attack cardinals, while nestlings and eggs are often the meal of small mammals, including foxes and raccoons.
Cardinals are found throughout the United States and into Canada and are year-round residents throughout their range. The birds are quite territorial during the early spring breeding season, often attacking intruding males. A common sight at backyard feeders, their diet consists of fruits, seeds and insects. Nests are constructed from bark strips, grass, hair, leaves, paper, roots, twigs and weed stems, with females typically laying a clutch of three eggs per season.
