Where do hickory trees grow?

Hickory trees grow east of the Mississippi River in zones 4 through 8. A type of hickory, the pecan, is native to southern states and grows west of the Mississippi and as far south as Texas. The hickory is a member of the walnut family.

The shagbark hickory can grow to between 70 and 80 feet tall with a spread of 50 to 70 feet. Like most hickories, it produces an edible fruit, but it is renowned for having an interesting bark that begins to peel as the tree gets older.

The pecan is grown for its nuts and can grow between 75 and 100 feet tall.
