A high bilirubin level is not a disease but a symptom and is treated according to the condition that caused it in the first place, according to WebMD. Causes of high bilirubin include infections of the gallbladder, liver damage and conditions that block the gallbladder ducts.
Other conditions that lead to high bilirubin levels are sickle cell anemia and transfusion reactions, says WebMD. Birth control pills can cause high bilirubin levels, as can certain antibiotics and sedatives such as Valium. Gilbert's syndrome is a genetic condition where the liver doesn't process bilirubin the way it should, according to Mayo Clinic. However, it is a harmless condition and does not require treatment.
