Some women develop a condition called postpartum preeclampsia, according to the Mayo Clinic. This rare condition causes high blood pressure and increased protein in the urine. Postpartum preeclampsia typicaly occurs within 48 hours of giving birth, but it can also develop four to six weeks after a woman gives birth.

Postpartum preeclampsia is similar to a condition called preeclampsia that occurs during pregnancy in some women. According to WebMD, preeclampsia is high blood pressure that presents after 20 weeks gestation and disappears with delivery of the child. If left untreated, high blood pressure due to postpartum preeclampsia can cause seizures and other dangerous symptoms.
