Specific social groups, or cliques, often form during high school. These cliques can form based on students' interests, school involvement, social status, background or other factors.

High school cliques often develop based on students' school interests and involvement. Kids often label students who participate and excel in sports as jocks, while they classify students who perform well academically as nerds. Other factors, such as students' racial or ethnic background, may contribute to the social groups they associate with. Finally, a student's social status - whether his peers consider him socially popular or not - may contribute to the clique with which others classify him.
