How high should you hang pictures?

Pictures should be hung at a height that lines up the center of the picture at the eye level of an average-height person. Wall size, ceiling height, light sources, heat sources and picture size are also important considerations for placement.

For placement above pieces of furniture, the bottom of the picture should sit 6 to 12 inches above the top of the furniture. This connects the picture to the furniture and maintains a cohesive room design. Scale is also important. Furniture acts to anchor a room, and it should be wider than the artwork hung above it; a picture that is larger than the furniture upsets the balance of the room.
