A Hindu teacher is called a guru or an acharya. These teachers are usually responsible for teaching religious matters, but they can teach any subject.
Hindus believe that their teachers are sent to Earth to teach by example. Each teacher's faith is individual and each teaches according to his own faith. No matter the subject, each teacher feels a responsibility to those he teaches, and students look up to teachers as role models on how to live a holy life.
Gurus who work hard to become successful gather large groups of followers. Modern gurus include Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura and Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.
