According to WebMD, hip joint replacement is a surgical procedure in which both parts of a bone in a damaged joint are replaced to create a new joint surface. Most of the time, the procedure is performed under general anesthesia, and the patient is asleep for the entire procedure.
After the surgery, the patient is instructed on how to walk with crutches and how to perform daily activities to allow the surgery site to heal, according to WebMD. Rehabilitation continues for some time after the patient goes home, often lasting around six months. Overall, most patients see a dramatic decrease in the amount of pain they experience and are able to more easily perform their daily activities.
