What is ancient Sumerian pottery?

Ancient Sumerian pottery is clay crockery that was created by the inhabitants of Mesopotamia between 5000 and 2000 B.C. Among the most commonly produced products were plates, jugs and other kitchenware. The Sumerians are thought to have been the first culture to use a potter's wheel.

Sumerian pottery was crafted using a technique known as "coiling," in which a long rope of clay was coiled into the form of a pot or bowl, then it was smoothed. The development of the potter's wheel allowed for the increased production of pottery, meeting the growing demands of trade as Sumerian civilization expanded across Mesopotamia.
