What is the right temperature setting for cooking a pork butt in a home oven?
By Forinfos - 02/05/2026 - 0 comments
Some recipes call for pork butt to be roasted at high oven temperatures — 400 or 500 degrees Fahrenheit — for 30 to 45 minutes. Then the temperature is turned down much lower, to 250 or 325 degrees. Cooking then continues for a few hours.
However, certain recipes call for the entire cooking process to happen at a very low temperature, such as 250 degrees, for nine to 10 hours. Prior to roasting, cooks sometimes prepare pork butt with a spicy dry rub. At this point, they often refrigerate the meat for at least one hour. Pork butt is also known as pork shoulder or Boston butt. This cut comes from the front of the pig.
