What is the Apache dance?

The Apache is a dance developed in the Montmartre neighborhood of Paris during the early 1900s that looks like a physical fight between a man and a woman. A lady named Mistinguette developed it, although two men are often credited.
Five years before meeting Max Dearly, Mistinguette invented and initially performed a mock-fight-as-dance with a Mr. Paulo. She later performed the same style of dance at the Moulin Rouge show with Max Dearly, who claimed it as his own according to Richard Powers.
Maurice Mouvet and Max Dearly observed fights of Paris street gangs called Apaches for inspiration, which resulted in a newspaper labeling this style of dance the Apache.
