The main function of the trachea is to deliver air from the mouth to the lungs during respiration. This part of the human body is also known as the windpipe, and it connects the larynx to the bronchi within the lungs.
The trachea is a hollow tube that lies directly behind the esophagus. It extends down the mid-line of the body and connects to the bronchi of each lung. The trachea delivers air from the mouth and nose into the bronchi for the lungs to expand. While eating, the trachea is covered by the epiglottis to prevent food from entering the trachea and the lungs.
