The Egyptian Shadow Clock consists of a solid base and a raised crosspiece known as the gnoman, according to Encyclopedia Britannica. The shadow, guided by the sun, moves from the east in the morning towards the west for sunset. It was the first sundial known to mankind.
The Egyptians depended on the sundial not only for time, but also for survival. For example, the farmers needed to know when the seasons began to change. Before the sundial, there was not an accurate way to measure this. The sundial helped the farmers determine when to plant seeds in the ground and harvest crops.
