Independence, Missouri is the hometown of 33rd President Harry Truman. Born in the small town of Lamar, Missouri, he moved to Independence at the age of six and returned to the city after his presidency.
After Truman's passing in Kansas City at the age of 88, his wife Bess lived in Independence until her death in 1982. Afterwards, the federal government designated the Truman home and surrounding grounds the Harry S. Truman National Historic Site. Today, the area is preserved by the National Park Service, which offers guided tours to guests seeking insight into the president's personal and family life.
