When was snowboarding invented?

Most snowboarding experts consider the true invention of the sport to have occurred in the 1960s. That is when Sherman Poppen created and began selling his Snurfer, a board designed for use in the snow.
At first, snowboarding drew mainly skateboarders, surfers and brave individuals who enjoyed a challenge. However, by the late 1970s and early 1980s, snowboarding became a bona fide winter sport, with innovators such as Jake Burton Carpenter and Dimitrije Milovich developing snowboard designs incorporating a variety of materials, as well as snowboarding accessories. By the 1990s, the snowboarders at ski resorts sometimes outnumbered the traditional skiers.
