Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent was the 10th and longest-reigning sultan of the Ottoman Empire. He became sultan in 1520 at the age of 15, ruling for 46 years until he died in 1566. His son Selim II succeeded him.
Born on November 6, 1494, Suleiman the Magnificent doubled the size of the Ottoman Empire during his rule. While Suleiman was sultan, the Ottomans captured Belgrade, Rhodes, Hungary, Buda and Transylvania, and they unsuccessfully tried to besiege Vienna, Austria. Suleiman was also a poet and accomplished goldsmith. He had one legal wife and two other female consorts. Between all three women, Suleiman fathered nine children.
