Colonial New York was previously a Dutch colony called "New Amsterdam," until it acquired its present name and became a chartered colony of the British Empire in 1664. Geographically located in the Mid-Atlantic region, Colonial New York had a temperate climate, an abundance of fertile soil and a longer growing period than other colonies. Due to its rich farmlands, agricultural products and natural resources comprised the bulk of the colony's major exports.
