German forces surrendered in Berlin, Germany, on May 8, 1945, and Japanese forces surrendered on the deck of the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on Sept. 2, 1945. It was two treaties, not just one, that ended hostilities in World War II.
According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, the German surrender (known as the German Instrument of Surrender) was initially signed on May 7, 1945 in Reims, Germany, but the Soviet forces disputed the authority of the signatories and requested a re-signing in Berlin on May 8. The Japanese surrender is known both as the Japanese Instrument of Surrender and the Potsdam Declaration.
