What is the hole to hell?

The hole to hell, more commonly known as the "Door to Hell" or Darvaza Crater, is a burning crater in Turkmenistan. Though details are sketchy, it is believed that the 225-foot wide crater opened up after a Societ drilling accident in the early 1970s, according to National Geographic.
The crater, which is also 99 feet deep, has been burning since that time. In November 2013, storm chaser George Kourounis became the first person to go down to the base of the crater. Kouronis, with help from his team, relied on a series of chains and a heat-repellent suit to gather soil for research at the bottom.
