Red underwear is worn on New Year's Eve in Spain. According to the custom, the underwear must be given to the wearer by someone else.
In addition to wearing red underwear that has been gifted by another, New Year's celebrants in Spain drop a gold ring in a glass of cava before drinking it - though the ring is not to be consumed. A bowl containing 12 green grapes is also eaten by each person in the moments before midnight. Chimes sound and one grape is eaten, a couple seconds apart, until all 12 grapes are gone. The grapes represent the 12 months that have just passed and must be completely chewed and swallowed before midnight to avoid a year of bad luck.
