What does it mean if a donation is requested in lieu of flowers?

"Donation in lieu of flowers" means to donate the amount one would spend on flowers to a preferred charitable organization instead. This phrase normally is seen in reference to a funeral or memorial service.

When this request is made, the family prefers a donation to a chosen charity rather than the purchase of flowers for the service. An attendee may choose to give flowers and also donate to the charity. However, if only one of these is done, it is preferable to donate only to the chosen organization. At times it may specify a charity, or sometimes the notice may request that donors contribute to their favorite charity in the name of the deceased.
