When buying a MasterCard gift card, the only fee charged is a one time activation fee at the time of purchase. The fee ranges from $2.88 to $4.95, depending on the denomination of the gift card and where the card is purchased.

The lower the dollar value on the gift card, the lower the activation fee. After a MasterCard gift card is purchased, there are no other subsequent fees. This holds true even if the card lies dormant without any spending activity for a long period of time. Each gift card has an expiration date on the front of the card, and once that date has passed, the card can no longer be used.
