The importance of Valentine’s Day lies in the fact that it celebrates love. It is a day of romance and for forming relationships that can last a lifetime. For many, it provides a nice contrast to the hatred and violence rampant in society.
Legend has it that in 269 A.D., the Roman Emperor Claudius abolished the system of marriage, as he felt that married men made bad soldiers. A priest named St. Valentine helped young lovers get married, and for this, he was executed. He became a martyr for love, and ever since, Feb. 14 is celebrated as Valentine’s Day, a day of love and romance. It was toward the end of the 19th century that people began to celebrate Valentine’s Day all over the world.
