Castile soap, Marseille soap, lye soap, Aleppo soap, and Fels-Naptha are examples of nondetergent soaps. Each of these is a lipid combined with an alkaline substance. Non-detergent soaps are naturally produced in solid in form. Soaps may be used to create detergent products.

Castile soap originated in Spain and is made with an olive oil base. Aleppo soap uses olive oil and also includes laurel oil. Marseille soap may include a variety of vegetable oils along with water from the Mediterranean sea along with lye. This differs from traditional lye soap, which is created by adding lye to animal fats.
