When do you plant hostas?

Plant hostas in the spring or early fall. The leaves are not fully emerged and it is easier to care for unestablished plants in mild weather.
Hostas need a shady location, well-drained soil and one inch of water each week. Plant hostas one to three feet apart. Position the crown just below the soil and leave a small crater around the plant so water funnels towards the base. Mulch new plantings with straw and water them well if the weather is hot. Hostas typically live a long time so choose the planting location carefully and plan to leave them undisturbed for years.
