How do you shock a pond?

Applying algaecide to a pond can clear the water of algae, restoring a sparkling accent to the landscape. Shock the pond by adding algaecide according to the manufacturer's directions after all decaying plant and animal life has been removed.
Though chlorine can be used to shock a pond, it can also harm desired plant and animal life. Algaecide can diminish the amount of algae in the pool while leaving other living things alone. Excess algae tends to rob fish and other plant life of necessary oxygen, creating decaying material that feeds the cycle for more algae growth. Lowering water temperature can also inhibit the growth of algae. Water temperature can be lowered by shading the pond.
