Home wart remover kits like Compound W and Walgreen's Wart Remover use salicylic acid to effectively remove warts from hands. Compound W Freeze Off destroys warts with dimethyl ether. Neither method should be used to remove warts from the face or genital area, warns the Warts Information Center.
Salicylic acid treatments are effective but can take several weeks to work. Warts may vanish with one freezing treatment, according to Dr. Scholl's. To improve the efficacy of salicylic acid wart remover, soak the wart in warm water prior to application of the product, and use a pumice stone to buff away dead skin between treatments.
