To set up a Wi-Fi network, connect your Internet modem to a wireless router with an Ethernet cable, and set up a network name and security key. You need an existing Internet connection with a modem connected to your main computer and a wireless router.
- Connect the wireless router
Place the router in a central location within your home. Connect your Internet modem to the router with an Ethernet cable.
- Change the default security information
Read the instruction manual for the router. Change the device's default user ID and password with the instructions included in the manual.
- Open the Network and Sharing Center
Navigate to the Control Panel through the Start menu. Find the Network and Sharing Center under Network, and open it.
- Set up a security key
Click Set up a new connection or network, and select Set up a new network. Click Next, and enter a network name and security key. Select WPA2 as a security level if possible. Follow the wizard to finish the setup process.
- Connect a laptop or desktop
On the laptop or desktop you wish to connect, right-click the network icon in the task bar. Select Connect to a network. Select the name you gave your network, and enter the security key.
