What is a horse water heater?

A horse water heater, generally called a de-icer, is a device that is kept in a horse’s water tank to keep the water thawed and drinkable in cold weather. De-icers are available as buoyant or non-buoyant.
A buoyant de-icer floats and keeps ice from forming on the water’s surface. A non-buoyant de-icer sits at the bottom of the water tank or is clipped to the side. It keeps ice from building up and also cannot be easily removed by the horse.
An individual can purchase a horse tank de-icer that automatically regulates the temperature of the water. Keeping the water in a horse’s tank unfrozen in cold weather is essential for keeping a horse well hydrated.
