How hot is the Aleppo pepper?

The Aleppo pepper is a moderately hot pepper, rating at 10,000 on the Scoville scale. This makes it hotter than the jalapeño and less hot than the Habanero pepper. Descriptions of the Aleppo pepper include a cross between cumin and cayenne.

Users also call Aleppo peppers halaby or Near East peppers. Growers dry the mature pods in the sun for 10 days, remove the seeds and crush the skins into a powder. While native to Syria, growers in the Napa Valley also produce Aleppo peppers. Substitutes for Aleppo peppers include a mix of four parts sweet paprika and one part cayenne pepper or Korean Gochugaru pepper.
