What is HRSD?

HRSD is the Hampton Roads Sanitation District, which is a political subdivision in Virginia. Established by voter referendum on November 15, 1940, its purpose is to keep the waters of the Chesapeake Bay clean by treating wastewater in southeast Virginia.

HRSD collects household and business wastewater from 17 counties and cities and treats it to be reused or disposed. The water that it reclaims for reuse is not pure enough to drink. However, it is safe enough for many other activities, such as watering lawns and washing cars. HRSD promotes water reuse as a way to save money, reduce pollution and conserve drinking water.
