Meiosis occurs in the reproductive organs of the human body. Meiosis is the process of cell division that is used to make sperm or egg cells, also known as gametes. In meiosis, cells divide twice.
In the female, meiosis occurs in the ovaries, and in the male, it occurs in the testes. Meiosis creates four new cells, which have half the number of chromosomes of the original cell. Meiosis is extremely important in ensuring genetic diversity in sexual reproduction. When two gametes unite during fertilization, each contributes its own set of chromosomes to the new organism. Meiosis occurs in organisms that reproduce asexually as well.
