Hurricane Katrina occurred early in the day on August 29, 2005. It finally dissipated on August 31 of the same year after reaching and damaging much of the eastern border of the United States.
Hurricane Katrina was one of the strongest and deadliest hurricanes to hit the U.S. In total, it cost an estimated $108 billion in damage and caused over 1,800 deaths. The state hit hardest was Louisiana, which accounted for an estimated 1,577 deaths, followed by Mississippi with 238. The hurricane originally hit Florida in the U.S. as a category one hurricane but then grew stronger until it eventually became a category five hurricane over the Gulf of Mexico.
