What is hyperbaric oxygen treatment?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a decompression sickness treatment that involves administration of pure oxygen through a tube or in a pressurized room, states Mayo Clinic. This therapy also treats conditions such as slow healing wounds, air bubbles in blood vessels and serious infections.
Air pressure in the pressurized room during hyperbaric oxygen therapy is three times higher than normal, explains Mayo Clinic. This increase in oxygen stimulates the release of stem cells and growth factors to promote healing. Although complications related to hyperbaric oxygen therapy are rare, there are potential risks such as seizures, temporary nearsightedness, lung collapse and middle ear injuries.
