The ICD-9 code for chronic pain is 338.2. This code is not used on a reimbursement claim. There are four codes under 338.2 that detail the kind of chronic pain.
For chronic pain associated with trauma, code 338.21 is used. Code 338.22 is for post-thoracotomy chronic pain. Other chronic postoperative pain is coded as 338.28, while all other chronic pain is coded as 338.29.
Chronic pain is pain that last for weeks to years, either after a trauma or disease, or from an undeterminable cause. The pain is mild to severe and can't be cured, but it can be treated. Common causes of chronic pain are cancer, arthritis and nerve damage.
