How do you identify asbestos insulation?

Asbestos insulation is identified by laboratory testing. A visual inspection is not sufficient evidence that insulation contains asbestos, and the American Lung Association recommends that a professional take samples for testing to minimize the risk of exposure to tenants or property owners.

The Environmental Protection Agency recommends leaving materials that are suspected of containing asbestos alone. Materials that aren't damaged are not likely to pose an immediate threat. Hitting, rubbing and working with suspected asbestos materials is likely to release asbestos into the air. Water damaged material, torn material or large vibrations can also release asbestos fibers. After asbestos removal, it is important to take air samples to ensure safety.
