What is an iliac furrow?

The iliac furrow, also known as the Adonis belt, refers to the two shallow grooves that run along the hip bones to the pubis. It is rarely used as a defined medical term but is commonly used to discuss the surface anatomy of the abdomen.

The iliac furrow is created by the inguinal ligament. Men and women with low body fat often have visible iliac furrows. It is referred to as the Adonis belt by many bodybuilders and health enthusiasts, but the term iliac furrow is still encountered when reading about art history. Other names for the iliac furrow include Poseidon's fanny-pack, Hercules' girdles and Apollo's belt.
