Why is it important to provide rental tenants with receipts?
By Forinfos - 03/04/2026 - 0 comments
In many states, tenants are legally entitled to a receipt for their rent payments, explains Nolo. Receipts are particularly valuable to those tenants who pay their rent in cash, because the receipt provides them with proof of payment.
Tenants may also need proof of payment to receive a renters' tax credit when they file their state taxes; a receipt from the landlord can serve as the required proof, according to Nolo. Landlords must provide receipts even if rent is paid by check, credit card or electronic transfer if state law requires it. Providing a receipt does not nullify the landlord's protection if a rent check bounces.
