Incision swelling is common following a bunionectomy, according to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. To reduce swelling, the foot should kept above heart level for at least two days after surgery. This is typically done by raising the foot up with pillows.

During the initial recovery period, an ice pack also helps reduce swelling, UPMC states. Ice should be placed on the affected area for 15 minutes every one to two hours during waking hours.

After the first two days, any swelling should be treated by elevating the foot, explains UPMC. If any swelling occurs after the dressing has been removed at the follow-up appointment to the surgery, a doctor should be consulted.
