The incubation period for impetigo is usually four to 10 days, according to NHS Choices. Red sores with a yellowish crust on the mouth and nose are the primary symptom of impetigo, notes Mayo Clinic.
There are two types of impetigo: bullous and nonbullous. Bullous impetigo is characterized by painful sores, fever and swollen glands, while nonbullous impetigo is limited to itchy, usually painless sores. Most impetigo patients suffer from nonbullous impetigo, reports NHS Choices. Impetigo is usually treated with antibiotic ointments or creams, although patients with many sores are also usually prescribed an oral antibiotic, according to Mayo Clinic.
