According to the Mayo Clinic, the incubation period for a stomach virus can be from one to three days. The most common stomach virus for adults is norovirus. The most common stomach flu for infants and young children is rotavirus.

The rotavirus can have a shorter incubation period of between one to two days, according to the Mayo Clinic. Symptoms following a stomach flu incubation can also be as short as four or five hours. The incubation period for a stomach virus does not correspond to the time frame in which a person might be contagious. A person can be contagious for anywhere from a few days to two weeks.
