What is inflammatory arthritis?

Inflammatory arthritis is characterized by an inflammation of the joints, as defined by the Arthritis Foundation. This includes several types of arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, gouty arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus, according to WebMD.

Some types of inflammatory arthritis are autoimmune diseases that can damage tissues of the body and threaten internal organs, states the Arthritis Foundation. Possible symptoms include joint pain, swelling and stiffness of the joints, and loss of joint function, reports WebMD.

Doctors prescribe medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to relieve pain and corticosteroids to stop the inflammation, according to the Arthritis Foundation. Physical therapy and exercise also help in the treatment of inflammatory arthritis, adds WebMD.
