Some of the most influential Civil Rights activists were James Farmer, John Lewis, A. Phillip Randolph, Roy Wilkins and Whitney Young. Martin Luther King Jr. was another influential Civil Rights activist, and the National Mall in Washington D.C. has a memorial dedicated to him.
Rosa Parks was also influential in the Civil Rights movement. Her nickname is "mother of the freedom movement." She is best known for refusing to give up her seat on a city bus for a white passenger in 1955, and she was arrested for this defiance. This sparked the Civil Rights movement in the South. Rosa Parks dedicated the rest of her life to fighting for social causes.
