What is the influenza B virus?

Influenza B is one of the three strains of the flu virus. The influenza B virus is only found in humans, and it causes body aches, coughing, congestion and fever, according to WebMD. Three types of influenza virus exist: A, B and C.

Of the three types of flu viruses, strain A is the most severe and is capable of infecting animals. The type B virus is less severe but still extremely dangerous, although it does not cause pandemics, according to WebMD. The influenza B virus is usually seasonal and can be treated before a person gets it by way of the flu shot vaccine.
