The 1970 census collected information on the number of people living in each household and each person's sex, race, age and martial status. A random sampling of the population were asked more extensive questions, including questions about education, employment and income.

All residents of the United States were asked the basic questions on the 1970 census. The longer questionnaire was answered by a small percentage of residents. The longer form asked extensive questions about countries of origin, languages spoken at home, education or training, employment, marital and reproductive status and income. The 1970 census data is freely available to the public in a searchable database.
