What is an infrared heater?

An infrared heater uses radiation instead of convection to warm up a room. Instead of blowing warm air, the heating element produces infrared energy that heats up any surface it contacts directly. These objects can then radiate that energy back out into the room, warming the air.
Infrared energy is what causes sunlight to feel warm. Sitting in front of an infrared heater is essentially like sitting in a sunbeam, and stepping out of a direct line of sight to the element produces the same cooling effect as stepping into shadow.
Infrared heaters work quickly, instantly warming any object in front of the heating element. They are also quiet, since no fan is needed to move air through the unit.
