On its website, the Tax Foundation provides a map of inheritance tax rates by state as of the year 2014. There are six states in the United States that use an inheritance tax, the rates of which vary from 0 to18 percent depending on the size of the inheritance.
The six states that levy an inheritance tax are Nebraska, Iowa, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland. The tax rate in all states depends on the size of the inheritance, with all states except Nebraska having a 0 percent option for smaller inheritances. Nebraska also holds the highest potential rate at 18 percent, while the other five have a maximum tax of 15 to 16 percent.
