To install artificial grass, cover the land with 1 1/2 inches of sand and a weed membrane, lay the grass on top, glue adjacent strips together, trim them, and insert ground pins. This two-day project requires sand, a tamper, a weed membrane, adhesive, a hammer, a knife and ground pins.
- Lay the sand base
Remove the existing vegetation, and pour 1 1/2 inches of sand over the ground you wish to cover. Tamp down the sand until it is hard and compacted.
- Install the weed membrane
Install a weed membrane over the sand, and trim the edges with a craft knife. Leave a 2-inch overhang on all sides.
- Place the grass strips
Place the grass strips over the weed membrane, and leave them in place overnight. This reduces wrinkles.
- Apply adhesive
Glue adjacent grass strips together with bonding adhesive. Keep the adhesive off of the grass surface.
- Trim the border
Trim the border of the artificial lawn and weed membrane with a craft knife, and discard the scraps.
- Install ground pins
Hammer ground pins throughout the artificial lawn. Place pins at 7-inch intervals along the perimeter, and drive pins into the lawn's interior at intervals recommended by the artificial grass manufacturer.
